Where it comes from

The story of Marisabel

Isabel carries two legends that refuse to die. One says that the grayish-yellow color called isabelline was named after the unwashed shift of Archduchess Isabella, who vowed not to change it until the siege of Ostend ended three years later; but the word is recorded in an inventory of 1600, before the siege began. The other says Queen Isabella of Castile pawned her jewels to pay for Columbus's voyage; she offered to, but the money was found elsewhere. Marisabel, a joining of María and Isabel common in Spain and Latin America, came into American records in the late twentieth century.
