Marijo
Feminine · “Mary”
Marijo is a double name written as one word, and the letter in the middle changes language depending on who is reading. To a Spanish speaker the j is made in the throat and the name is Mari-Ho; to an English speaker it is a plain j and the name is Mary-Jo. Both readings are correct and the name works either way.

The story of Marijo
Double names built on Mary are a whole American genre: Mary Jo, Mary Lou, Mary Beth, Mary Ann, and in Spanish-speaking families Maria Jose, Mari Carmen and Marisol. They come from two different traditions that happen to look alike. In Catholic Europe a girl was often given Mary as a first name almost as a matter of course and distinguished by the second, so the pair functioned as one unit; in the American South and Midwest the double name was simply the fashion, used in full every time and never shortened. The records collapsed the space because a form has one box, and a great many of these names entered the national data as single words that no family had ever written that way. The j in this one belongs to both languages at once, and gives the name two lives.
Meaningscholars disagree
Mary, plus may he add
The first half is Mary, whose own meaning has never been settled despite two thousand years of proposals. The second is Jo, from Joseph or Josephine, and the Hebrew behind Joseph is a sentence asking God to add another child. So half the name is a mystery and half of it is a request, and the compound as a whole was made for sound rather than for sense.

Pronouncing Marijo
MAR-ee-joh
Three syllables with the stress at the front. Spanish speakers say mah-ree-HO, with the weight at the back and the j made in the throat; both are in current use in the United States and neither is a mistake.

Fashion outlook
Marijo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is at home in English and in Spanish without being changed, which few compound names manage.
- Both halves are complete names, so there are two entirely different short forms available.
- Written as one word it functions as a single name rather than as a pair needing a space.
- Two languages means two pronunciations, and a family with both will have to choose one for daily use.
- Mary Jo, Maryjo and Marijo all exist, so the written form has to be specified.
- Double names of this kind are firmly dated to the middle of the last century in American ears.
