Marijane
Feminine · “Mary and Jane together”
Marijane is Mary and Jane run together, and the pair has had an unusually busy life outside the register. A shoe style carries it, taken from a child in a comic strip that half of America read at breakfast. A drug carries it too, through a story about its origin that has never actually been established. The name itself is older and duller than either: two names, given together, as double names were.

The story of Marijane
The shoe came out of a comic strip. Buster Brown, drawn by Richard Outcault at the turn of the century, had a sweetheart called Mary Jane, and a shoe company that bought the rights to the characters put her name on a strap-fronted children's shoe at the St Louis world's fair in 1904. The style is still called that, well over a century later, by people who have never heard of the strip. The drug sense is a separate matter and a shakier one. The story usually told, that the Spanish word came from a pair of women's names, is not established. The word's origin is genuinely disputed, with proposals from Nahuatl among others, and the resemblance to two names may be exactly the kind of after-the-fact tidying that linguists call folk etymology. What is certain is that the English slang followed the Spanish word rather than the other way round.
Meaning
Mary and Jane together
Both halves are traceable and neither is in doubt as a name. Mary comes through Latin and Greek from a Hebrew name whose own meaning has never been agreed, and Jane is the English feminine of John. The compound has no separate sense of its own. It is a pairing of the kind English-speaking families made in quantity for two centuries, and the joined spelling is simply how it was written once the two were treated as a single name rather than as two.
How the name formed
- Mary and Jane as separate names
- Given together as a double name
- Written as one word on the register
- The shoe and the slang arriving afterwards
Pronouncing Marijane
MARE-ee-jane
Three syllables, main stress on the first and a lighter one on the last. Some families say muh-REE-jane instead. The i in the middle is a joining vowel rather than a spelling of Mary, which is why the name looks unfamiliar even though its parts are the most familiar in English.

Fashion outlook
Marijane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries two family names at once, which is what double names were for and still does the job.
- It shortens to Mari or to Janie, so the child has a plain everyday option in either direction.
- Both halves are among the most recognizable names in the language, so nothing about it needs explaining.
- The slang association is immediate for most Americans and will not be dispelled by explaining the etymology.
- The joined spelling will be split by clerks, and the split version will be joined by everybody else.
- It reads as belonging to one particular generation of American naming, and it has not yet come back round.
