Ellen and Helen are the same name and English used both for six hundred years. The h was dropped in French, restored by scholars who knew the Greek, and never fully settled, so the language ended up with two forms of one name and treated them as separate.

Where it comes from

The story of Mariellen

The Helen of the Iliad is given a voice and uses it against herself. She appears on the walls naming the Greek commanders for the Trojan king, who treats her with unexpected gentleness; she calls herself a bitch and a horror to her own face more than once; and she weeps over Hector's body saying he was the only one in the city who never spoke unkindly to her. The poem never tells the reader what to think about her. She is not a prize being fought over so much as a woman living inside the consequences of something the poem declines to explain, and the sympathy in the writing is unmistakable and never stated.

Meaningnot established

Unknown, plus unknown

Neither half has a secure meaning. Mary's Hebrew original has attracted a dozen proposals over two thousand years and none has carried the field; Helen's Greek original is equally unexplained, with readings involving torches, the moon and a sun goddess all in circulation and none demonstrated. A compound of two mysteries is still a mystery.

Mariellen sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Mariellen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are entirely familiar in English, so the name is understood at once.
  • Three short forms available, all of which stand alone as names.
  • Written as one word it works as a single name rather than a pair needing a hyphen.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is a great deal of name and will be shortened by other people immediately.
  • Mary Ellen, Maryellen and Mariellen all exist, so the written form has to be specified.
  • Compound names of this shape are firmly dated to the middle of the last century.
