Where it comes from

Our story of Mariane

The soft red cap with the folded-over point is a Phrygian cap, and the revolutionaries who adopted it believed it was the pileus, the felt cap given to a Roman slave at the moment of manumission. They were conflating two different hats, but the meaning they intended was exact: this is the headgear of somebody who has just been freed. It went onto the head of the Republic, onto coins, onto the seal of the French state, and from there onto the flags and arms of a dozen Latin American republics founded in the same spirit. A cap that signified the end of somebody's slavery is now on the letterhead of several governments.

Mariane sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 24 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Mariane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are established names, so the compound is unusual without being strange.
  • Mari and Annie are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
  • It works in English and French households with only a shift of stress.
What to consider
  • Marianne is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected to it regularly.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No reason for the missing letter is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks.
