The story of Mariaguadalupe
Spain has a great many rivers beginning with Guad, and the reason is that Arabic speakers ruled much of the peninsula for centuries: wadi is the Arabic for a river valley, and it survives on the map in Guadalquivir, Guadiana and Guadalajara. Guadalupe is one of them, joining that Arabic front to a second element usually read as the Latin for wolf, giving something like the river of the wolf. The Extremaduran town of that name has a famous shrine, and Spanish friars carried the name to Mexico. Then the story doubles. When the Virgin was reported to have appeared outside Mexico City, the name recorded for her was Guadalupe, and scholars have argued ever since that Spanish ears may have been rendering a Nahuatl word they could not otherwise spell. The argument is not settled, and both halves of it are held sincerely by people who have looked hard at the sources.

Fashion outlook
Mariaguadalupe sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a devotion that is central to Mexican life, which makes it immediately legible to a very large number of people.
- Lupe and Lupita are established short forms, so the long version never has to be said in a hurry.
- The meaning of both halves is documented and easy to explain.
- Written as one word it is long, and American forms and databases will break it, truncate it or split it in the wrong place.
- Most people who meet it will assume the space belongs there and will put it back.
- It is a strongly religious name, which is a feature for many families and a consideration for others.
