The story of Mariadelcarmen
The title comes from the Carmelite order, named for Mount Carmel, and it became one of the most loved devotions in the Spanish-speaking world. In Spain the Virgen del Carmen is the patron of seafarers, and on her feast, July 16, coastal towns carry her image down to the harbor and out onto the water in processions of fishing boats. As a name, María del Carmen is formal and complete; in daily life it becomes Carmen, Mari Carmen or Carmina. The American federal name file stores names of two to fifteen letters with no spaces, so the whole title is closed into one word, and at fourteen letters it fits, where the longer María de los Ángeles cannot.

Fashion outlook
Mariadelcarmen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A classic of Spanish naming with a clear devotional meaning.
- Comes with ready everyday forms, from Mari Carmen to Carmen.
- Instantly understood by Spanish speakers as the full, formal name it is.
- Forms and databases will split it, add spaces or drop them, and lose the accent on María; deciding early how the legal name is written saves trouble later.
- English-speaking classmates may not know where one part ends and the next begins, so an everyday form such as Carmen will do most of the work outside the family.
