Two respellings of this name remove different letters from the same cluster. One drops the u and keeps the e; this drops the e and keeps the u — which means it preserves the letter that actually matters, since the u is what stops the g going soft and the e is doing nothing at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Margurite

A woman of this name commanded armies because her husband could not. She was married at fifteen to an English king who was periodically insensible and entirely unfit to lead, and when the civil war began she raised troops, negotiated with Scotland and France, and fought a campaign that came within reach of London. Contemporaries hated her for it with a venom they did not direct at any man doing the same thing. She lost, her son was killed, and she was ransomed home to France to live on a pension.

Meaning

a pearl

The Greek word for a pearl, reaching English through Latin and French. The word may have come into Greek from further east and its earlier history is lost, but its sense has been stable for millennia.
