Where it comes from

The story of Margrette

The name belonged to a queen who put three kingdoms together. Margaret of Denmark inherited one crown, married into a second, outmaneuvered a claimant for a third, and ended up ruling Denmark, Norway and Sweden at once — formally as regent, since a woman could not be crowned, but in practice as the sovereign of the largest state in northern Europe. The union she built lasted more than a century. She is one of very few medieval rulers whose reputation is for competence rather than for battles, and the arrangement she made is still the reason the Scandinavian countries talk about each other the way they do.

Meaning

A pearl

The Greek word behind Margaret means a pearl and reached Greek from further east with the pearl trade. The shortened middle and the added ending in this spelling change nothing about the meaning.

Fashion outlook

Margrette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and the name is one of the great European ones.
  • It has an unusually deep bench of short forms across several languages.
  • The spelling matches the pronunciation, which the standard one does not.
What to consider
  • Margaret and Margarette are both standard and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The doubled t and final e are decoration rather than instruction.
  • The name is strongly associated with older generations in America.
