Margrett writes the name the way it is actually said. Nobody pronounces the middle syllable of the standard spelling, and this version simply leaves it out and doubles the final consonant instead. One of its medieval bearers was a seven-year-old queen who died at sea before she ever reached the country she had inherited.

Where it comes from

The story of Margrett

Ancient and medieval writers had a theory about how pearls were made, and it was wrong in a way that lasted. Pliny wrote that oysters rose to the surface at certain seasons, opened, and took in dew, and that the quality of the pearl depended on the quality of the dew: clear weather gave a white pearl, cloudy weather a dull one. Medieval encyclopedias copied him for a thousand years, and the idea worked its way into sermons and poetry, where a pearl became an image of something formed by heaven rather than dug out of the ground. The actual process, a shell coating an irritation, is less flattering and was not established until much later.

Meaning

pearl

The Greek word for a pearl stands behind every form of this name, and the reading is settled. What is not settled is where the Greek word came from: it was borrowed from further east, and the trail through Persian and Sanskrit is argued about. Neither the dropped vowel nor the doubled consonant in this spelling affects any of that.

How the name formed

  1. A Greek word for a pearl, borrowed from the east
  2. Carried across Europe as a saint's name
  3. One of the commonest medieval women's names
  4. Margrett as a spelling that drops the middle

Fashion outlook

Margrett sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It writes the name as it is genuinely said, with nothing silent.
  • The whole apparatus of short forms is available from it.
  • The meaning is one word and can be given to a child at any age.
What to consider
  • Margaret is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The doubled t is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
  • It reads as an older name, which may be exactly the point or may not.
