Margorie moves two letters in a name that already had two spellings competing. Marjorie and Margery have both been in English use since the Middle Ages, the j and the g were doing the same job, and this version transposes the letters of one of them — producing a third spelling of a name that was already unable to make up its mind.

Where it comes from

The story of Margorie

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a newspaperwoman in Miami who wrote a book about the Everglades at a point when everybody who mattered regarded them as a swamp to be drained. She began it with the sentence that changed the argument — that there are no other Everglades in the world — and gave the place a name that has stuck: a river of grass, moving, not stagnant. She was in her fifties then and spent the next half-century defending it, still testifying at hearings in her nineties, and lived to a hundred and eight.

Meaning

a pearl, at several removes

Behind the whole family stands Margaret, which came into Europe from a Greek word for a pearl and probably before that from Persian. Medieval English produced Margery from it, French produced Marguerite, and the j and g spellings have been alternating ever since because the sound they write is the same. This version transposes the g and the o, which changes nothing audible and produces a spelling that most readers take for a slip.

How the name formed

  1. a Greek word for a pearl gives Margaret
  2. medieval English produces Margery
  3. the j and g spellings alternate for six centuries
  4. Margorie appears as a transposed spelling in the 1900s
  5. peaks in the 1920s and fades

Fashion outlook

Margorie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
