Margherita
Feminine · “Pearl”
The story that the pizza is named after a queen is probably a marketing invention. A Naples pizzaiolo is said to have made one in the national colors for a royal visit in the eighteen-eighties; the document that proves it has been examined and looks like a later forgery, and the combination was on menus before the visit.

The story of Margherita
The letter of thanks from the palace that hangs in the restaurant has been studied by historians who found the paper, the seal and the phrasing all wrong for its supposed date. What is documented is that a tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza existed in Naples before the visit, that the visit happened, and that the naming was being advertised from the nineteen-thirties onward. It is a very good story and a great many food origins turn out to be like it: not lies exactly, but claims made later by somebody with an interest, repeated until they became the thing everybody knows. The name itself is a queen's, and she was real.
Meaning
Pearl
The word came into Greek from further east and meant the pearl before it meant anybody. The Italian spelling uses gh to keep the g hard before an e, which is a rule Italian applies consistently and English does not have at all. The meaning is the same in every European form of the name.

Pronouncing Margherita
mar-geh-REE-tah
Four syllables with the stress on the third. The gh keeps the g hard, which is the whole reason those two letters are there; without the h an Italian reader would say a j sound.

Fashion outlook
Margherita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is the standard Italian spelling rather than an American approximation.
- Rita, Ghita and Greta are three short forms in three different traditions.
- The meaning is concrete, pleasant and completely uncontested.
- The gh will be read as a silent pair by English speakers, who have no such rule.
- Margarita is far commoner in America and will be substituted.
- Four syllables is long for daily use and a short form will be chosen early.
