Marelyn
Feminine · “Mary joined to Lyn”
Marelyn is Marilyn with a different middle vowel, and Marilyn is itself an American invention of the early twentieth century: Mary joined to the -lyn ending that Carolyn and Evelyn had made available. Its peak here is 1937, which puts it with the dancer Marilyn Miller rather than with the actress everyone thinks of.

The story of Marelyn
Marilyn appears in American records from the 1910s and rose sharply in the 1920s and 1930s. The likeliest cause is Marilyn Miller, one of the highest-paid Broadway stars of the era, who took the stage name in 1918 and was a household figure through the 1920s. The name reached the American top twenty by 1937 — which is where this spelling peaks — and had already begun to decline before Norma Jeane Mortenson took it in 1946. That is worth noting, because the association now runs entirely the other way: the name made the star's name, not the reverse.

Mary joined to Lyn
Mary descends from Hebrew Miryam and its own meaning has never been established — 'bitter', 'beloved' and an Egyptian derivation are all proposed. The -lyn ending descends by sound from Welsh llyn, 'lake', through the place name and surname Lynn, but carries nothing here. So the compound has one unresolved half and one empty one, which is the ordinary condition of a name built this way.

The Raphaela test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marelyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Raphaela climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Raphaela's path sketches the road Marelyn is walking now.
Marelyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
