Where it comes from

The story of Marcy

Marcia and Marcella descend from one of Rome's old family names, and English used both from the medieval saints' calendars. Mercy is a quite separate English virtue name from the Puritan period, common enough in seventeenth-century registers to leave descendants. Marcy served as a pet form of both, and American use rose through the 1950s and 1960s, peaking in the mid-1960s.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Mars; mercy

Read through Marcia or Marcella, the meaning is 'of Mars', from the Roman family name Marcius. Read as a form of Mercy, it is the Latin merces, 'reward' or 'wages', which came through Christian Latin to mean the compassion shown to someone who has not earned it. The two are entirely unrelated.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Marcy went to 44 girls in 2025, but Marci is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 72, which makes it the 888th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,571 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,323 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 36,529 for Marcy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
