The story of Marcine
The prayer that survives in a Roman agricultural manual asks Mars to keep disease, barrenness and bad weather away from the fields and the herds, and to protect the shepherds. There is nothing military in it. Scholars generally take him to have been a god of the boundary — of the edge of the cultivated land, where the wild begins — and war to be one aspect of defending that edge rather than the whole of his character. The month named after him is the start of the campaigning season and also the start of the farming year.

of Mars
The Roman clan name behind Marcus and its many descendants is generally connected to the god, though Roman clan names are frequently older than any explanation of them. This name is one of the American feminines built on that stock with an ending that was attaching itself to anything, and its own construction is not documented.
