The priests of Mars danced through Rome in armor singing a hymn that nobody could understand. The Salii processed for days in spring and again in autumn, beating figure-of-eight shields, and the words of their song were already unintelligible to educated Romans who copied them out anyway.

Where it comes from

The story of Marcey

The hymn survived because a priesthood does not need to understand its own liturgy. The Salian song was in an archaic Latin already centuries old when the republic was young, and it was transmitted by rote, syllable by syllable, by young men from patrician families who learned it as a duty of office; fragments were still being quoted by grammarians long afterwards, and nobody could translate them. It is the oldest surviving Latin of any length, and its survival is entirely due to a conservatism so complete that it preserved sounds after meaning had gone. The dance was in armor, in the street, and it went on for eight centuries.

Of Mars

The Roman first name Marcus is generally connected to the god of war, and the women's names built on it inherit that reading. Which full name this spelling shortens is a separate question the record does not answer, so the meaning arrives through an assumption about the parent name.

MAR-see

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The c is soft because of the e after it, which is the rule English inherited from French and applies without exception before e and i.

Fashion outlook

Marcey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar and never mispronounced.
  • Short, warm and easy to say from the page.
  • It goes with almost any surname.
What to consider
  • Marcy and Marci are both commoner and spelling it out is permanent.
  • It reads as a pet form whatever is on the certificate.
  • It is dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American use.
