Maralyn is Marilyn with an a in the middle syllable, and the middle syllable of Marilyn is not pronounced with any particular vowel at all. It is the flat colorless sound English uses in unstressed positions, and any letter can stand for it. The change is entirely visual, which is the honest thing to say about it.

Where it comes from

The story of Maralyn

The -lyn ending entered American naming from Lynn, a short name in its own right, and in the first half of the twentieth century it attached itself to almost everything. Marilyn was the most successful of those compounds, and once a compound succeeds its spellings multiply, because the unstressed vowel in the middle can be written with an i, an a, an e or nothing at all and no English listener can tell. Maralyn is one of the spellings that resulted. It has one bearer worth knowing about: Maralyn Bailey, adrift in the Pacific with her husband for nearly four months after a sperm whale holed their yacht, who kept a diary, invented games to hold the days apart from one another, and was picked up by a Korean fishing boat when they had very nearly stopped expecting anything.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Maralyn has no separate meaning because it has no separate history: it is a spelling of Marilyn, which is Mary with the ending -lyn attached, and Mary's own meaning has never been settled. The Hebrew Miryam has attracted a dozen proposed explanations over two thousand years, among them bitterness, rebellion, wished-for child and an Egyptian word for beloved, and none of them has carried the field. A name can be four thousand years old and still have no meaning anyone can defend.

Maralyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1936, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Maralyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is instantly familiar, so nobody ever needs it repeated, only spelled.
  • Mara and Lyn are two very different short forms, one continental and one plain American.
  • It is a settled twentieth-century name rather than a new coinage, so it carries no risk of sounding manufactured.
What to consider
  • Marilyn is overwhelmingly the standard spelling, so this one will be quietly corrected on forms and in print.
  • The change buys nothing that can be heard, and a child may eventually ask what it was for.
  • Marilyn is tied to one particular era and one particular film star, and the a does not loosen that association at all.
