The story of Manuelita
She left a husband to follow Bolivar, rode with the army, was made a colonel, and after his death was exiled first from Colombia and then from Ecuador. She ended in a fishing village in Peru selling tobacco and translating letters for whalers, and when she died of diphtheria her papers were burned with the rest of her possessions. Latin American history spent a century treating her as a scandal and the last few decades putting her back — she now has a symbolic tomb beside him, which she would probably have found funny.
Meaning
God is with us, at two removes
The base is a Hebrew phrase, worn down through Greek and Spanish into Manuel, feminised as Manuela and then given the Spanish diminutive. Three operations on one sentence. The ending is affectionate rather than childish in Spanish, and a woman of any age can carry it without it sounding odd.
How the name formed
- a Hebrew phrase meaning God is with us
- Spanish produces Manuel and then Manuela
- the diminutive ending gives Manuelita
- a revolutionary carries it through the independence wars
