Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Maniya
As a girl in Warsaw, the physicist Marie Curie was Maria Skłodowska, and her family called her Manya, the Polish pet form of Maria. Far to the east, in Tibet and Ladakh, travelers pass heaps of mani stones carved with om mani padme hum, a prayer whose middle words speak of a jewel in the lotus. Maniya sounds like both: the small household name of a woman who later won two Nobel prizes, and the old word for a jewel. It belongs to neither, and it carries a little of each.
