Where it comes from

The story of Manda

Amanda first appears as a character name in Restoration comedy, in a play about a wronged wife, and was picked up immediately by other playwrights and by poets who liked the sound and the transparent meaning. It spread as a literary name through the eighteenth century and became an ordinary one in the nineteenth. Manda comes off the front of it in exactly the way that Bella comes off Isabella and Lissa off Melissa: the first syllable is unstressed, so speech drops it, and eventually somebody writes down what is left. American records carry Manda from the very first year of the count.

Meaning

she who must be loved

The Latin behind Amanda is a grammatical form meaning fit to be loved or requiring to be loved. It is a construction rather than a word Romans used as a name, which is why the name has no ancient bearers at all.

Manda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1978, with 94 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Manda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • Mandy is a ready short form and a standing name in its own right.
  • The meaning of the name behind it is unusually transparent and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • It reads as a short form, and formal settings will look for the Amanda that may not exist.
  • Amanda is a very common name and this will be assumed to be an abbreviation of it.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records but has been rare for a century.
