The story of Malanie
Two Roman women called Melania, grandmother and granddaughter, both became saints in the fourth and fifth centuries; the younger gave away one of the largest private fortunes in the Roman world and founded monasteries in Jerusalem. Their cult carried the name through the Greek and Latin churches. It reached England in the medieval period, faded, and returned in the twentieth century. Melanie Hamilton in Gone With the Wind, published in 1936 and filmed in 1939, is generally credited with the American revival, which built through the 1950s and peaked in the 1970s. The a-spelling belongs to that peak.
Meaning
black, dark
Greek melas, melanos, means black or dark, and melaina is its feminine. The name Melania was formed from it in the Roman period and is a straightforward color description. The same root gives melancholy — literally 'black bile', one of the four humours — and melanin, the pigment. The derivation is settled and the word is entirely ordinary in Greek.

Three syllables, stress on the first. Identical to Melanie in American speech, where the first vowel of both is a short e — the a spelling does not change it. Some readers do produce MAL-uh-nee, which is the one hazard of this version.
