The story of Majesty
Maiestas in Rome named the dignity of the state itself, and offenses against it were maiestas crimes — the origin of the charge English calls lese-majesty. Medieval French took the word for God and then for kings, and English followed. Its use as a given name is recent and American, part of the same group as Royalty, Legend, Princess and Reign, and it is given to both sexes in roughly comparable numbers.
Meaning
greatness, sovereign dignity
From Latin maiestas, formed on the comparative of magnus, great; the word entered English through French in the fourteenth century and was applied to monarchs from the fifteenth.

The Nadir test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Majesty's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nadir climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nadir's path sketches the road Majesty is walking now.
Majesty sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- An ordinary English word, so it needs no teaching to say or spell.
- A precise Latin history that is easy and interesting to tell.
- It works for a boy or a girl, which is useful before a birth.
- It is a very large claim to hand a child, and strangers will comment on it for life.
- The word is normally used as a form of address to a monarch, which makes it unusual as a name.
- Being used for both sexes means forms and teachers will sometimes guess wrong.
