Ludwig Bemelmans said he got the idea for Madeline after a bicycle accident on a French island put him in hospital, where a small girl in the next room was recovering from having her appendix out; he gave her his wife's name and published the first book in 1939, with its famous opening line about the old house in Paris covered with vines.
