The story of Madigan
That leading Ó has its own history, and much of it is loss. Under the penal laws and the long anglicization that followed, Irish families across the country dropped the Ó and the Mac from their surnames — sometimes because a clerk did it for them, often because a name that looked less Irish was easier to live behind in a job, a courtroom or an emigration queue. By the middle of the nineteenth century the prefixes had vanished from a large share of Irish surnames. After independence they began to come back, deliberately and unevenly, so that today two branches of one family can spell the same surname with and without the Ó. Madigan is one of the many that crossed the Atlantic in its shortened form, and it is that shortened form — surname-shaped, ending in a syllable American ears hear as soft — that became a first name for daughters.

descendant of Madagán
The Irish form is Ó Madagáin, and the personal name inside it is usually taken as a diminutive built on a word for a dog or hound — a common enough element in early Irish names, where a hound was a compliment rather than an insult. Some genealogists prefer a different root altogether. What is not in doubt is the shape: an ancestor's name with a diminutive ending, and the whole preceded by the word for a descendant, which is how the great majority of Irish surnames are built.
How the name formed
- Ó Madagáin: descendant of a man whose name held a diminutive
- The Ó is dropped during the long anglicization of Irish names
- The surname travels to America in its shortened form
- American parents give it to daughters as a first name

Fashion outlook
Madigan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Instantly readable and impossible to mispronounce, which few three-syllable names manage
- A genuine surname with a documented Irish origin rather than an invented one
- Strong and unfussy, and it does not read as belonging to any particular decade
- It will be shortened to Maddie constantly, which puts the child among a great many Madelines and Madisons.
- Surname-names are read as surnames on forms, which produces the usual question about which box each name belongs in.
- The record shows it arriving as a girl's name recently and without a bearer to explain it, so there is no story attached beyond the surname's own.
