Our story of Madi
Ours, offered as ours. Magdala was a fishing town on the Sea of Galilee and its name means a tower — the same word that gives migdal in Hebrew. So Mary Magdalene's name is really Mary of Tower-town, an address rather than a description, which is how most people in that world were distinguished. Madison is a completely different thing: son of Maud. Madi serves both and is short enough that nobody asks.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Magdala; or son of Maud
Madeline descends from Magdalene, the woman from Magdala, a town whose name means a tower. Madison is an English patronymic on Maud, from Germanic Mathilda, mighty in battle. The clip carries either.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Madi went to 32 girls in 2025, but Maddy, Maddi and Mady are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 93, which makes it the 867th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,485 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 17,282 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 50,227 for Madi itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Janira test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Madi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Janira climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Janira's path sketches the road Madi is walking now.
Madi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
