The story of Mackenzy
Compton Mackenzie was a novelist who wrote a hundred books and is remembered for one, and the one is true. In the winter of the war a cargo ship went aground off the Hebridean island where he lived, carrying a quarter of a million bottles of whisky to America at a time when the islands had none, and the islanders emptied her before the authorities arrived. Mackenzie turned it into a comic novel about a customs officer losing a war against an entire community, and the film that followed made the island famous. Bottles were still being dug out of the sand sixty years later.
Meaning
son of Coinneach
The first syllable is the Gaelic word for son and the rest is a particular man's name, which is how every Mac surname is built. This spelling is one of a dozen the American record carries, and it is the only common one that ends in a plain y — the standard forms end in ie, and the difference between them is entirely a matter of the eye. In current American use the ie spellings lean towards daughters and this one, for reasons nobody has explained, leans the other way.
How the name formed
- Coinneach, an old Gaelic personal name
- Mac Coinnich becomes a Highland clan surname
- a sheep thief gives his name to a New Zealand basin
- a Hebridean shipwreck becomes a novel in 1947
- American families give the surname to daughters

Fashion outlook
Mackenzy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
