Where it comes from

The story of Mackenzee

William Lyon Mackenzie was a newspaperman, the first mayor of Toronto, and the leader of a rebellion that marched down a Toronto street and was scattered within the hour. He fled to the United States, was jailed there, and eventually came home to a pardon. His grandson, named after him, became Prime Minister of Canada and held the office across three separate terms for more than twenty years, longer than any other prime minister in the Commonwealth. He also kept a private diary in which he recorded consulting mediums and speaking with his late mother and his dead dog, a fact the country only learned when the diary was published. Rebellion in one generation, the longest tenure in the country's history in the third.

Meaning

son of Coinneach

Mac means son of, and Coinneach is the Gaelic name behind it. The reading is settled. The double e at the end is a modern American respelling and carries no meaning of its own.

Three syllables with the weight on the second. Mac and Mc are the same word abbreviated two ways, said identically, and the common belief that one is Irish and the other Scottish is simply untrue: both turn up in both countries.

Fashion outlook

Mackenzee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is familiar to every English speaker, so nobody is ever stuck for how to say it.
  • A long documented history stands behind the surname, in Scotland and in Canada both.
  • Kenzee is ready as a short form and is already in wide use.
What to consider
  • The double e ending is the least common of four spellings, so it will be corrected to Mackenzie or Makenzie regularly.
  • It is three syllables to spell aloud, and it will be spelled aloud often.
  • It reads as a surname to older listeners, which is exactly what it is.
