Where it comes from

The story of Mabell

Mabel Normand was the first great woman star of silent comedy at Mack Sennett's Keystone studio, directing some of her own films and working opposite Charlie Chaplin in his earliest shorts. Mabel Hubbard, deaf from scarlet fever at five, was a pupil of Alexander Graham Bell, and they married in 1877; much of his work on sound and speech grew out of his teaching of the deaf, and she helped fund and guide his later experiments. Mabell, with its doubled l, was one of the spellings of Mabel used at the turn of the century.
