Lyndsay changes the first vowel and keeps the last. Lindsay, Lindsey and Lyndsay are three spellings of one name — an English fen district that became a Scottish noble surname that became an American girl's name — and the y at the front is the only thing this version does that the others do not.

Where it comes from

The story of Lyndsay

A Norman family took the Lincolnshire name to Scotland, became earls, and made Lindsay one of the great Scottish surnames. It reached America, became a boy's name, and moved to girls in the later twentieth century. What happened to the spelling then is characteristic: -ay and -ey split the name roughly along sex lines, and then the y-for-i substitution — the single most common move in American respelling — produced Lyndsay and Lyndsey on top of both. Four spellings, one name, and no standard among them.

Meaningscholars disagree

Lincoln's island

The Lincolnshire district Lindsey is read as the old British name behind Lincoln plus the Old English eg, an island: high ground surrounded by marsh, which it genuinely was. The first element's own meaning, probably a word for a pool, is reconstructed rather than recorded. A surname taken from a district records where a family came from and not what anything meant, so the meaning is two removes away before the name is anyone's first.

LIN-zee, two syllables, stress at the front, the y sounded as a short i and the s voiced as a z. All four spellings are said identically, so nothing about the sound distinguishes them.

Lyndsay sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1982, with 403 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lyndsay sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The y at the front makes Lyn a natural short form spelled to match.
  • There is a documented English district and a major Scottish family behind it.
  • The sound is entirely familiar and never causes a stumble.
What to consider
  • Four spellings compete and Lindsay and Lindsey are both far more common than this one.
  • The y is inaudible, so it has to be dictated every time and will still be dropped.
  • The name is tied closely to one American generation and dates a person fairly precisely.
