Luverne carries a word that most English speakers have met without knowing it. Verne is an old French word for an alder — the tree that grows with its feet in water and turns a startling orange when it is cut — and it survives now mainly as a surname, most famously the one belonging to the man who wrote about journeys to the center of the earth.

Where it comes from

The story of Luverne

The alder is worth knowing about. It grows where nothing else will — riverbanks, bogs, ground that is under water half the year — because it fixes its own nitrogen and does not mind wet roots. Its timber will not rot while it stays submerged, which is why Venice stands on alder piles driven into the mud a thousand years ago. And when it is cut the pale wood turns orange within minutes, as though it were bleeding, which is why so many folk traditions across northern Europe treated the tree with suspicion and why so many places are named after it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The back half is almost certainly the French word, which came into French from Gaulish and named the alder in the south and west of the country before Latin's own word displaced it elsewhere. The front is harder. It may be the French article run together with the noun, as in La Verne; it may be a Norwegian-American family's spelling of something else; it may be the name of a town in Minnesota that families in that part of the country used. All three were live options in the decades this name appears.

How the name formed

  1. a Gaulish word for the alder survives in French
  2. Verne and Lavergne become French surnames
  3. carried to America and to French Canada
  4. Luverne appears in the record in the 1910s
  5. used for sons and daughters alike

Luverne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 65 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Luverne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Vern and Lu are both available and belong to completely different decades.
  • It works for a son or a daughter, and the record carries it on both sides.
  • There is a real tree behind it, which is more than most invented-looking names can say.
What to consider
  • Laverne is commoner and will be written instead, particularly by anyone who watched American television in the 1970s.
  • The origin is a reasonable reconstruction rather than a documented fact.
  • It is firmly of the first half of the last century.
