Lustreware is a metallic glaze invented in ninth-century Iraq and it took four hundred years to reach Italy. Potters in Basra worked out how to fire a thin film of silver and copper onto a finished glaze so that it came out looking like polished metal, and the technique traveled by way of Egypt, Syria, Spain and finally Tuscany.

Where it comes from

The story of Luster

The secret moved with the potters. Every stage in that journey happened because a workshop broke up and its people went somewhere else: the technique appears in Egypt when Iraq is in trouble, in Syria when Egypt is, in Spain under Muslim rule, and in Italy only at the end, where it was reinvented rather than taught and the Italians were still trying to work out how it was done. The pieces that reached European courts were valued as though they were metal, which was the point of them. It is one of the clearest cases of a craft secret being tracked across four centuries purely by where the surviving pots were made.

Shine

If the name is the English word, it descends from a Latin verb about light and gives luster, illustrate and illustrious. If it is a respelling of Lester, it is a city in the English midlands and means something quite different. The American record holds it as a given name without ever explaining which.

LUS-ter

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is why -er and -re produce the same sound and the spelling is a matter of which side of the Atlantic wrote it down.

Luster sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 37 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Luster sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Short, firm and impossible to mispronounce.
  • The word behind one of its two readings is concrete and pleasant.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • Two possible origins means no meaning can be given with confidence.
  • It belongs to the oldest layer of the American record and reads that way.
