The story of Lucretia
Roman tradition holds that the rape of Lucretia by the king's son and her death afterwards triggered the revolt that replaced the Roman monarchy with the republic. Whether the woman existed is not settled, but the story was central to how Rome explained itself, and it was retold constantly through the Renaissance in painting, poetry and drama — Shakespeare wrote a long poem on it. The name traveled on that retelling into Italian, Dutch and English use.

The feminine of the Roman clan name Lucretius, whose meaning was not recoverable even in antiquity. It is sometimes linked to lucrum, 'gain', but that is a later guess with nothing behind it. The family is documented; the sense is not.

The trade-off
- Lucy is available as an everyday short form, which makes a formal name wearable.
- A documented place in the founding story of the Roman republic, which is about as much history as a name can carry.
- Lucrezia and Lucrecia are the same name in Italian and Spanish.
- The Roman story is a story of rape and suicide, and anyone who knows it knows that first.
- Lucrezia Borgia is the other association, and her reputation — largely unfair, but fixed — is for poison.
