Lucrecia
Feminine
Rome dated its own republic from an assault. Livy tells the story: Lucretia, a noblewoman, is raped by the king's son, tells her family, and kills herself; her kinsmen carry her body to the forum and the monarchy falls within days. Whether it happened is doubtful. That the Romans believed their liberty began there is not, and the name carried that weight for two thousand years.

The story of Lucrecia
The story of Lucretia was told and retold — by Livy, by Ovid, by Chaucer, by Shakespeare in a long poem — and it made the name a byword for a particular kind of virtue in a way that must have been heavy for the women who carried it. It was also, in the Renaissance, the name of a Borgia daughter whose reputation went in the opposite direction entirely. Spanish and Italian both kept it. The Spanish spelling replaces the Latin ti with ci, which is a regular sound change rather than an error, and it is the version American records receive.

Not established
Lucretia was a Roman family name, and Roman family names are mostly older than the records that carry them. The usual proposal connects it to lucrum, gain or profit, which would make it something like the profitable one — an ordinary sort of Roman name. It is a guess, and the Romans themselves offered no explanation.

Four syllables, stress on the third. In Latin American Spanish the c before i is a plain s; in Spain it is a th. Italian says Lucrezia with a ts in the middle, which is a noticeably different sound.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Keiko test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lucrecia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Keiko climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Keiko's path sketches the road Lucrecia is walking now.
Lucrecia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has one of the most consequential stories in Roman history attached to it.
- Lucy is available as a short form and is currently among the most-used names in the country.
- Four open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
- It is standard in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese rather than an American variation.
- The Roman story is a story of rape and suicide, and anyone who looks it up will find that immediately.
- The Renaissance bearer has a reputation for poison that is largely undeserved and entirely persistent.
- Lucretia and Lucrezia are both standard elsewhere, so relatives may write it differently.
