Where it comes from

The story of Luciel

Lucilla was a Roman name, the little Lucia, and French made it Lucile. The best-known bearer of that French form in the English-speaking world was a fashion designer: Lucy Duff-Gordon, who sold her gowns under the label Lucile, gave her dresses names, and is credited with staging some of the first fashion parades with live models. She was also among the survivors of the Titanic. Luciel stands beside her name with its vowels arranged differently.

Meaningscholars disagree

light, by way of Lucile

Most likely a respelling of Lucile, the French form of Latin Lucilla, a diminutive of Lucia, from lux, light. The -iel ending also recalls Ariel and Muriel, and no record says whether families meant Lucile or built the name fresh from Luc- and -iel.

Fashion outlook

Luciel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Its meaning, light, comes through a well-documented Latin family.
  • Lucy and Lu are ready short forms.
  • It is very rare, so she will seldom share it.
What to consider
  • People will read it as Lucille and spell it that way; the ie will need explaining.
  • Some will say it in two syllables, loo-SEEL, rather than three.
  • A handful of boys have been given it; for them it will read as a girl's name everywhere.
