Luanna
Feminine · “grace”
The American habit of joining two women's names into one is usually dated to the mid-twentieth century. Luanna peaks in 1888, which puts it two generations earlier and makes it a precursor rather than a product: Lu plus Anna, fused before Maribeth or Ruthanne existed.

The story of Luanna
American compound women's names have three periods. The nineteenth-century one, which produced Luanna, Roseanna, Marianna and Sarahann, joined two established names with no fuss and usually doubled a letter at the join. The mid-century one produced Maribeth, Ruthanne, Marilyn and Jolynn, and was more self-conscious about it. The current one produces Emmalynn and Amarianna from parts rather than from whole names. Luanna belongs to the first, and its 1888 peak places it with the generation that also gave Adda, Annah and Dessa. A quite separate Hawaiian Luana entered American use after 1932 and has nothing to do with it.

grace, with a first element from Louisa or Lucy
The Lu- element may come from Louisa, from Germanic hlud, famous, and wig, war, or from Lucy, from Latin lux, light. Anna is from Hebrew Hannah, grace. A separate route makes Luana a Hawaiian word popularized by a 1932 film, which cannot account for an 1888 peak. The compound has no meaning of its own.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Two complete names inside one, both with long histories.
- Lu and Anna are both usable and belong to different traditions.
- Genuinely nineteenth century rather than a modern compound.
- Luana without the doubled n is more common and has a different vowel.
- A separate Hawaiian Luana shares the sound and has its own history.
- It reads as a nineteenth-century American name, because that is its period.
