Where it comes from

The story of Loyde

Lloyd began as a Welsh nickname and surname, and English writers spelled it Lloyd, Loyd and Floyd as they tried to capture the Welsh ll. David Lloyd George, who led Britain through the end of the First World War, grew up in a Welsh-speaking village in Caernarfonshire, and Welsh was his first language. In America, Sam Loyd, the most famous puzzle-maker of his time, spelled it with one l and promoted the sliding fifteen puzzle with a large cash prize for a position he knew could never be reached. Loyde adds a silent e to the American spelling.

Fashion outlook

Loyde sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds exactly like a well-known name with a clear meaning.
  • It is short and easy to say.
  • It is almost never given now, so it is distinctive.
What to consider
  • People will write Lloyd, and the single l and final e will need spelling out.
  • It sounds old-fashioned to many ears.
