Where it comes from

The story of Lovie

Lovie was a familiar name in the nineteenth-century South, for girls far more than boys. Lovie Austin, born Cora Calhoun in Chattanooga, became house pianist and arranger at Paramount Records in Chicago in the 1920s, leading her own Blues Serenaders and accompanying Ma Rainey, Ida Cox and Alberta Hunter; she was one of the very few women bandleaders of the era. In the 1960s Gilligan's Island gave the name to a character: Eunice Howell, the millionaire's wife, whom her husband called Lovey.

A pet name from 'love', or a short form of Louvenia or Lavinia

Lovie can be a direct pet name from the word love, or a short form of longer names such as Louvenia and Lavinia; the record does not separate them.

Lovie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 18 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lovie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Warm and simple.
  • A long history in the American South.
  • Carries a notable bearer in jazz history.
What to consider
  • It sounds like an endearment, which some people will find too sweet for a full name.
  • People may assume it is a nickname and ask for the full name.
  • The spelling is recorded for a handful of boys, but it is a girl's name in every tradition behind it.
