The story of Lorrine
The region's symbol is the reason the name still carries weight in France. The Cross of Lorraine — a cross with two horizontal bars — was a local emblem for centuries before it was anything else. When France fell, de Gaulle's Free French took it as their badge, chosen deliberately against the swastika, and it flew on the ships and aircraft of the forces that kept fighting. The name has an American figure of equal standing: Lorraine Hansberry, whose play about a Black family buying a house in a white Chicago neighborhood was the first by a Black woman to reach Broadway. She had lived it — her own family fought the case over a restrictive covenant all the way to the Supreme Court.
Meaning
From Lorraine, the region on the French and German border
The region's name comes from the kingdom of Lothar, a grandson of Charlemagne, and the name means, in effect, the woman from there. The doubled r and the -ine ending are American spelling choices and change nothing about the meaning.

Fashion outlook
Lorrine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The place behind it is real, findable on a map, and full of history a child can grow into.
- The back stress gives it a strong finish and resists being clipped to nothing.
- It is understood in French and English alike without adjustment.
- Lorraine is the standard spelling and hers will be rewritten as it, indefinitely.
- The name belongs strongly to one mid-century American generation.
- Laurine, Laureen and Loraine are all close enough to be confused with it in speech.
