The story of Lorn
Forlorn is one of those English words that has swallowed its own parts. The lorn in it is the past participle of an Old English verb meaning to lose, so forlorn is literally utterly lost, and the bare word lorn survived on its own into the nineteenth century and now appears almost nowhere except in lovelorn. As for the place, Lorn is one of the old divisions of Argyll, and the tradition recorded in the Irish and Scottish sources has the kingdom of Dál Riata divided between three brothers who crossed from Ireland, with Loarn taking this stretch of coast and giving it his name. Whether the three brothers are history or a later tidy-up of something messier is argued over, but the district and its name are still on the map.
Meaningnot established
Not established
If the name is the Scottish district, it carries a personal name from the Dál Riata kings whose own sense is not recovered. If it is the English word, it is a past participle meaning lost. The two have nothing to do with each other and the record does not say which a family meant.

Fashion outlook
Lorn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
