The story of Lorina
The dedicatory poem to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland names the three Liddell sisters in Latin ordinals and describes the afternoon on the Thames when the story was invented to keep them quiet. Lorina was thirteen, Alice ten, Edith eight. The name was already in use before the book, but the book put it in front of an enormous readership on both sides of the Atlantic in exactly the years when American records first begin. Where the name itself comes from is less certain than where it was seen. The -ina ending is a Latin feminine borrowed into English and applied freely in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which makes the first half the only part with anything to say, and it does not say it clearly.

laurel, at one remove
Two accounts. The likelier treats Lorina as a Latinate feminine built on Laura or Laurence, from laurus, the laurel. The other connects it to Lorraine, which is Lotharingia, the kingdom of Lothar — a Frankish king's name meaning famous army. Neither has been established for this form.
