Lauren became an American women's name in the nineteen-forties when a young actress was given it as a screen name, and the spellings began dividing almost at once. Loren stayed available for men, being closer to the Italian Lorenzo and to the surname; Lorin drifted toward women. Neither convention was ever written down and both are consistent enough in the record to be visible. The au in the standard spelling comes from Latin and both shorter versions have dropped it.
