The story of Lorien
Tolkien was a philologist by trade, and he said more than once that the stories existed to give his invented languages somewhere to live rather than the other way round. That is why the names in his books behave like real ones: they have roots, they change across dialects, and they mean things consistently. Lorien is Quenya; Lothlorien is the Sindarin form of the same idea, and the elements can be taken apart the way a linguist takes apart a real word. As a name for a child it is brand new, arriving in American records only in the last few years, and it is arriving almost evenly split between boys and girls — which is what usually happens with a place name, since a place has no sex to inherit.
Meaning
a place of dreaming
In Tolkien's invented Quenya, Lorien is the name of the gardens of the Vala of dreams, built on an element meaning slumber or dream. Lothlorien, the wood in The Lord of the Rings, takes its name from the same source. The meaning is settled in the sense that its author fixed it; it is not an etymology in any natural language.

The Silver test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lorien's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Silver climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Silver's path sketches the road Lorien is walking now.
Lorien sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented in print by the person who made it, which almost no name can claim.
- It serves either child, and the records so far show it doing exactly that.
- Three syllables, all of them easy, with no ambiguity in the spelling.
- The source is unmistakable, so the name announces a particular enthusiasm to anyone who recognizes it.
- It is extremely new and very rare, so almost every introduction will involve an explanation.
- The even split means forms and teachers will guess, and will be wrong about half the time.
