Lorean
Feminine
Lorean has three plausible parents and no way to choose between them. It can be a spelling of Lorene, a shortening of Lorraine, or a lengthening of Lora, and those are three different names with three different histories. The one with the most to say for itself is the French province, whose two-barred cross became one of the twentieth century's better-known emblems.

Our story of Lorean
The cross with two crossbars belonged to the dukes of the province long before it meant anything else. It was carried in the fifteenth century, it appeared on their arms, and it stayed a piece of regional heraldry for four hundred years. In 1902 it was adopted as the emblem of the campaign against tuberculosis, which is why it turns up on charity seals and sanatorium gates all over the world. In 1940 it was chosen again, this time as the badge of the Free French, deliberately as a counter-emblem to another one. Three uses, one shape, and no connection between them except that a two-barred cross is easy to draw and hard to mistake for anything else.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Three candidates and nothing to decide among them. Lorraine is a place name; Lora and Lorene descend from a Latin word about the laurel; a straightforward American coinage is also possible. The endings that separate them in writing are all said the same way, which is exactly why the spellings drifted together in the first place.
How the name formed
- A duchy on the French and German border
- A two-barred cross as its heraldic badge
- Lorraine, Lorene and Lora as English names
- Lorean as a spelling that sits between them

luh-REEN
Two syllables with the stress at the back, and a first syllable reduced almost to nothing. Some American families say LOR-ee-an instead, with three syllables, and the spelling supports both readings equally.

Fashion outlook
Lorean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar and needs no coaching.
- Lo and Reenie are two very different short forms.
- It is genuinely uncommon while being made of familiar material.
- Two pronunciations are in genuine use and the spelling settles neither.
- Loreen, Lorene and Lorine will all be written for it.
- No source can be given, because three of them are equally likely.
