Our story of Lonnie
The American record of the 1880s reads very differently from the record of a century later, and Lonnie is one of the names that shows why. Diminutives were registered as full names in enormous numbers — Willie, Johnnie, Bessie, Lonnie, Ollie, Mattie, Dovie — and a great many of them were unisex, because the -ie ending did not yet signal a sex on its own. Lonnie was given to girls and boys in comparable numbers in that decade. Two things ended the practice: formal names reasserted themselves through the twentieth century, and the -ie ending drifted decisively feminine, which made the surviving male Lonnies read oddly. The boys' version outlasted the girls' by fifty years and then both faded.

Depends on the name it shortens
Lonnie serves as a short form of several unrelated names: Alonzo and Alphonso, both from the Germanic Adalfuns, noble and ready; Leonard, from Germanic elements meaning lion and brave; and Apollonia, from the god Apollo. Which of these a given Lonnie shortened is not recoverable, and by the late nineteenth century the name was frequently given on its own.
