Lonie is a short form that several unrelated names arrive at from different directions. Alonzo loses its front and becomes Lon. Leona and Apollonia lose a piece each and land in the same four letters. One spelling, three possible parents, which is why the older American registers carry it for sons and daughters alike without anybody at the time finding that odd.

The story of Lonie
Three stocks feed this name and none of them owns it. On the men's side Alonzo, which American families used freely in the nineteenth century, wears down to Lon and then takes an ending. On the women's side Leona and Apollonia arrive at much the same place from the other direction. Apollonia is the one worth knowing about. She was an elderly deaconess of Alexandria whose teeth were broken by a mob before she was killed, and she became, by the plainest logic available to anybody in pain, the saint invoked against toothache. Dentists took her as their patron and put her in stained glass holding a tooth in a pair of pincers. A name that reaches a register as four letters can have that standing behind it, or a Spanish nobleman's name, or a Latin lion, and the register will never tell you which.

Not established
A short form has no meaning of its own. It has whichever parent you assign it, and here there is more than one candidate with a decent claim. If the parent is Alonzo, the sense runs back through Spanish to a Germanic compound about readiness and nobility. If it is Leona, to a Latin lion. If it is Apollonia, to the god Apollo. Nothing in the four letters chooses between them, and the families who used the name generally had no need for it to.
How the name formed
- Alonzo, Leona and Apollonia as possible parents
- Lon and Lona as the short forms
- Lonie on the register for sons and for daughters
- Rare on both sides ever since
Pronouncing Lonie
LOH-nee
Two syllables with a long o. The single n is what keeps the vowel long; Lonnie, with two, has a short one, so the two spellings are not variants of each other however similar they look.

Fashion outlook
Lonie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, soft and immediately sayable, and it belongs to no living fashion at all.
- It can be introduced as a full name or explained as a short form, and both accounts are true.
- It has a real nineteenth-century record, which separates it from names that only look old.
- It is on the register for boys as well as girls, and a modern reader will assume otherwise on sight.
- Lonnie is the spelling most people know, and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
- There is no single parent name to point to, so the question of what it is short for has three answers and no tiebreak.
