Where it comes from

Our story of Loida

Casiodoro de Reina was a monk in a Spanish monastery that turned Protestant, fled when the Inquisition moved in, and spent the next twelve years in Geneva, London, Antwerp, Frankfurt and Basel, working on a complete Spanish Bible while being pursued by agents and accused of everything his enemies could think of. He published it in Basel with a bear on the title page, which is why it is known by the printer's device. A colleague revised it a generation later and the revised text became the standard Spanish Protestant Bible, still in use four centuries on. Its distribution across Latin America is the reason a set of minor scriptural names — including this one, which occurs in a single verse — became ordinary given names in Spanish-speaking families while remaining almost unknown in Catholic ones.

Not established

The Greek name has never been explained. It appears once, with no context that would help, and the glosses offered — agreeable, better, desirable — are guesses built backwards from other Greek words. The Spanish form inherits the blank exactly.

Fashion outlook

Loida sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to write and spell aloud.
  • It reads correctly on sight in both Spanish and English.
  • The route by which it reached American families is genuinely documented.
What to consider
  • Lois and Loyda will both be written for it.
  • It is closely tied to one religious tradition, which some families want and others do not.
  • The name's meaning has never been established, so there is nothing to give.
