The story of Loic
Eligius was a seventh-century goldsmith who became bishop of Noyon and patron of metalworkers, farriers and, later, of anyone who works with horses; his cult was enormous in Brittany and northern France. Louis, separately, is the Frankish royal name. Breton naming produced Loïc from one or both. The diaeresis marks that the o and i are said separately, which French readers need told.

Not established
One reading takes Loïc as the Breton form of Louis, from Germanic hlod and wig, famous warrior. Another derives it from Eligius, Latin for chosen, through the French Éloi. Neither is settled and both are seriously offered.

The Ruslan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Loic's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ruslan climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ruslan's path sketches the road Loic is walking now.
Loic sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries Breton identity clearly, which is the point for the families who use it.
- Four letters and two syllables, quick to write.
- Two documented saints stand behind the competing readings.
- The diaeresis is dropped by American systems, which collapses the vowels.
- English speakers will say it as one syllable, LOIK, which is wrong.
- The origin is genuinely argued between two unrelated names.
