Lizbet
Feminine · “My God is an oath”
Lizbet cuts a syllable off each end, which almost no English shortening does. The language normally takes the front of a name and keeps it, or takes the back; taking the middle and discarding both ends produces something that does not look like a shortening at all.

The story of Lizbet
One Elizabeth is remembered for a basket of bread. A Hungarian princess married into a German landgraviate, widowed at twenty, gave away enormous quantities of food and money to the poor during a famine, and was resented for it at court; the story that grew up says she was stopped on the stairs and asked what she was carrying under her cloak, and when she opened it the bread had become roses. She died at twenty-four and was canonized within four years, which is nearly the fastest on record. The roses are a legend and the famine relief is documented: she sold her own jewelry, opened the granaries and built a hospital at the foot of her own castle, and the court's objection was that she was spending the estate.

My God is an oath
The Hebrew joins a word for God to one that means both an oath and the number seven, and translations vary accordingly. The full name is one of the most productive in English, and this is one of dozens of short forms it has generated, most of which do not resemble each other or the original.

Fashion outlook
Lizbet sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a real Scandinavian name and not only an American clipping.
- Liz and Betty are two short forms with completely different flavors.
- Two syllables makes it easy to say and to write, which the four-syllable full name is not.
- It will be read as a shortening of Elizabeth whatever is on the certificate.
- Lisbet, Lizbeth and Lisbeth all exist, so spelling it out is likely.
- The back half is an ordinary English word about gambling, which children find.
Nobody names a baby alone.
