Our story of Linnie
The London society named after the great Swedish classifier held an evening meeting at which two papers were read together: one by a naturalist who had been sitting on his idea for twenty years, and one posted from the Malay archipelago by a younger man who had arrived at the same idea independently and forced the first man's hand. The joint reading was arranged by friends to be fair to both. Nobody in the room said anything. The society's president wrote in his annual report that the year had not been marked by any of those striking discoveries which at once revolutionise a branch of science — a sentence that has been quoted against him ever since. The book that followed the next year sold out on its first day. The meeting is a standing demonstration that an audience of experts can sit through the thing they are experts in and not notice.

Caroline, Linda, Melinda, Evelina and Belinda all yield this familiar form, and they do not share an origin. Some families almost certainly built it straight from the sound. With the short form registered alone, there is nothing to trace back to.
Pronouncing Linnie
LIN-ee
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled n keeps the first vowel short, which is the only thing separating this from a reading with a long i.

Fashion outlook
Linnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and readable at first sight by anybody.
- Lin detaches cleanly and works for a child of any age.
- It has been in continuous use for a very long time, which few familiar forms manage.
- Linney, Linnea and Lennie will all be written for it.
- It reads as a nickname, which suits some working lives better than others.
- The record holds it for sons in its earliest decades, though almost never now.
