Lindy
Masculine

Short forms almost never come back. A full name can go out of fashion, drop away for eighty years and return sounding fresh, but a diminutive usually dates its bearer permanently and stays dated. This one has managed it anyway, appearing in the record from the eighteen-eighties and rising again a century later.

The story of Lindy
The only part of this name that is not borrowed is the y at the end. The front comes from somewhere: a Germanic element about a lime tree or a shield, or an English county, or a Spanish adjective, depending on which parent a family had. The ending is English, one of the two affectionate suffixes the language uses freely, and it is doing the whole work of turning whatever came before it into a name a child answers to. That is the ordinary structure of a diminutive and it is worth noticing how little of the result is actually inherited.

Several parents produce it — a name whose own Germanic element is disputed, an English place name, and others — and the record does not choose between them. No reading can be given with confidence.

Fashion outlook
Lindy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and completely easy to say on first hearing.
- It is returning, which means it reads as neither dated nor invented.
- The spelling can only be read one way.
- It reads as a short form to many people even when it is the legal name.
- No meaning can be given, because the parent cannot be identified.
- The record holds a few boys as well, and the boy is much the smaller side.
Nobody names a baby alone.
